Mobile Internet Access
During the last few years, the new technologies of internet access have continually progressed to converge
with the mobile communications network (or cellular network). The last generation
of mobile phones (3G) and wireless LAN or WIMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access)
are new technologies that allow for anyone to connect to the internet
almost anywhere in the world. Most of the new models of multimedia mobile phones have an internal modem that permits the Internet connection directly from the mobile and without having to connect to a computer. Many researchers
predict that by the next year (2008), half of all mobile phones will be
capable of connecting to the Internet.
While the cell phone may be used to for common operations like making and
receiving phone calls, it may be also used to retrieve information,
games, or music from the internet. Currently, the majority of users that connect to internet from their
mobile phone do so in order to download ringtones, download music, or to play video games.
Strangely, not many of the current mobile internet users use their
internet connection to get information or search, but this may be a
byproduct of the relatively young age of the persons using this service.
The first step in the introduction of new offers of innovative services, as the increase of the methods of internet access, would be to create a base of clients for the traditional services of information and voice transmission. The internet user should pay depending on the downloaded contents and the service that had used. The cell phones manufacturers are creating new models of phones that have incorporated internet access and e-mail. These mobile phones, called also of third generation (3G) have the same speed of connexion to internet as the ADSL, due to its UMTS connexions (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). The creation of the last generation of cell phones are making to appear the competition between the telecommunications operator.
